John Penton ist ein amerikanischer Geländesportpionier und Motorradhändler in Amherst / Ohio. Bei europäischen Geländesportwettbewerben wurde er 1967 erstmals auf die leichten Maschinen von KTM mit 100 und 125 ccm Sachs-Motor aufmerksam. Diese waren überwiegend modifizierte und umgebaute Straßenmodelle. Für den US-Markt suchte Penton schon lange nach einem leichten Motorrad für die Klasse bis 125 ccm.
Er beauftragte KTM mit der Entwicklung einer derartigen Geländemaschine nach seinen Vorgaben. Von dem, was ihm die Techniker von KTM in Mattighofen da so zusammenstellten, war er sofort überzeugt und bestellte 1000 Motorräder, die unter dem Namen Penton in den USA angeboten wurden. Dies war die Geburtsstunde und Keimzelle für die Herstellung reiner Offroadmotorräder bei der Firma KTM. Noch bis 1977 wurden alle KTM Modelle in den USA als Penton angeboten.
